Accomplishment is intrinsically rewarding; we become happy when we apply ourselves. — location: [367](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=367) ^ref-51415 --- “Lessig Method.” — location: [608](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=608) ^ref-24668 --- very few of us ever feel truly loved, listened to, or respected. — location: [1152](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=1152) ^ref-25413 --- Start each day—and certainly each presentation—seeking to reach common ground with your audience. — location: [1160](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=1160) ^ref-12567 --- Start thinking about your audience: Who are they? The longer we feel anxious about a possible result (rather than doing something about it), the more likely we are to have reason to fear those results. We can spend time eliminating anxiety through extra work, preparation, and commitment, or we can wallow in pessimism about what may occur and just wait for it to happen. — location: [2074](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=2074) ^ref-49155 --- TOP 10 OVER-THE-COUNTER ANXIETY REDUCERS FOR PRESENTERS — location: [2083](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=2083) ^ref-20944 --- 10. When it comes to feeling good, though, there are no compartments; it’s all one feeling, and you either have it or you don’t. This is one of the greatest pitfalls presenters face: The week(s) leading up to a presentation can be extremely stressful. Late nights, early mornings, traveling, and other routine-crushers become the norm, and all of a sudden we don’t have time for the workout routine that helps us feel strong and confident. After a week or two of crash preparation, we stumble on stage feeling like trash. Don’t let it happen to you. No matter how hard you have to work in the days or weeks leading up to a presentation, be absolutely steadfast in making time for yourself every day. Not only is exercise a proven way of relieving stress and anxiety, but the pride it instills in people often spills over into other areas—like feeling smart, capable, and organized. 4. It was a compromise, and he had gotten the large panda bear as a thoughtful substitute for his son’s sacrifice. It was a profound personalization. His message, which had dealt in the statistical evidence that families are drifting apart as individual family members find it easier to pursue individual interests, felt real. I didn’t just understand that my choices impact the lives of my loved ones; I felt it. I felt for the speaker’s son’s missed zoo visit, but I also felt for the speaker. I fully appreciated his commitment to what he was saying, since he clearly felt torn being away from his family over the weekend. To this day, I think about how my decisions affect my loved ones more vividly than I ever had prior to hearing this speaker. — location: [2441](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=2441) ^ref-54398 --- You’ll often find that at the end, the speaker often assumes a much more empathetic, relational posture. The voice, once powerful and authoritative while setting key points in stone, becomes calm and understanding. Instead of being distant on stage, perhaps behind a lectern, the speaker moves to the edge of the stage or out among the audience for closeness. He or she revisited the main points, but with an emphasis on the passion behind them and how imperative it is that the audience act on the objectives set forth in the speech. — location: [2456](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=2456) ^ref-23527 --- Cliff Atkinson, author of The Backchannel, has written at great length on this subject. — location: [2605](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=2605) ^ref-1531 --- A presentation design and training company www.ethos3.com; Twitter: @ethos3 — location: [2734](kindle://book?action=open&asin=B004KKXZNK&location=2734) ^ref-64525 ---
